Waterpower XVI Conference & Exhibition

Pre-Conference Workshop
An Introduction to IEEE Hydro Standards and Guides

Tuesday, July 28, 8:00 a.m.-Noon

Registration: No Charge

Organized By:
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) Hydroelectric Subcommittee

This workshop provides an overview of several new standards and guides on governors, controls and automation, commissioning, and rehabilitation, developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) for the hydroelectric industry. The Hydroelectric Power Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Energy Development and Power Generation Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society. The subcommittee is actively engaged in developing standards, guides, and technical presentations in the area of hydropower. Workshop leaders will engage participants in discussions of the applicability of the new guides and explore how they will affect water power's future.

Registration required.

Pre-Conference Workshop
Hands-on Workshop with FLOW-3D®: Simulating a Transient, 3-D Free-Surface Hydraulics Flow Problem

Monday, July 27, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Registration: US$200 (The full cost of the workshop will be refunded to those who purchase a FLOW-3D® license.)

Organized By:
Flow Science and Alden Research

Instructors in this hands-on workshop demonstrate how to set up, simulate, post-process, and interpret results from a three-dimensional, transient CFD simulation. Participants will use FLOW-3D® on classroom computers to implement a full-scale simulation. In the afternoon, participants can build their own models or make modifications to existing models to learn the capabilities of the software. Attendance during the afternoon is optional. Laptops will be provided.

Space is limited. Registration Required.

Pre-Conference Workshop
Machine Condition Monitoring Workshop

Monday, July 27, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Registration: US$185

Organized By:
VibroSystM

The workshop, designed for power generators (utility and independent power producer decision makers, plant managers, engineers, and O&M personnel), will discuss monitoring issues, as well as operation and maintenance problems, observed on hydroelectric machines. Participants will learn how air gap monitoring provides users with a comprehensive analysis and diagnosis of their machines. Based on more than 20 years of data gathering, VibroSystM experts and customers will present case studies of the use of vibration and temperature monitoring and other innovative technologies at hydro projects throughout the world. Discover the advantages of condition monitoring and learn how to protect your investment with unique and complete solutions.

Registration Required; limited to first 40 registrants.

Pre-Conference Workshop
You Agreed to WHAT? Compliance and Implementation Issues

Monday, July 27, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Registration: No Charge

Organized By:
Northwest Hydroelectric Association

Join a panel of licensing, operations and marketing experts from the Northwest Hydroelectric Association as they present and discuss the pitfalls associated with the "left hand" licensing not talking to the "right hand" (operations), and solutions to use when settlements become real license conditions that need to be complied with, including restrictions arising from newly listed or species of concern.

Registration Required.

Pre-Conference Workshop
Optimization of Hydropower Operations

Tuesday, July 28, 8:00 a.m.-Noon

Registration: US$250

Organized By:
Hatch Ltd. and Synexus Global

This workshop demonstrates optimization methods used in conventional hydropower and pump-generating station operations. Learn how to integrate optimization into long-term strategic planning, short-term (hourly) scheduling, and real-time unit commitment and dispatch scheduling. Workshop leaders will explore water resource network modeling, electric network constraints, and interaction with electric system market

Registration required.

Pre-Conference Workshop
Rehabilitation Technology Workshop

Tuesday, July 28, 8:00 a.m.-Noon

Registration: No Charge

Organized By:
Toshiba Corporation

This seminar focuses on rehabilitation technologies, including environmentally-friendly technology supplied by Toshiba for hydro installations. Workshop leaders examine the advantages-and challenges-of various approaches and share lessons learned in planning and implementing plant upgrades.

Registration required.
